Usually found near water, this heron also occasionally hunts for food in upland areas and fields. It eats mainly fish but also feeds on small birds, mammals and garbage. The large bulky nests are made of sticks and placed in small colonies in isolated trees.
Easily heard and seen within its range, this hawk occurs in riparian areas with tall trees. It sits on exposed branches below the canopy for long periods and also soars over the forest in sweeping circles. The Gray Hawk eats lizards, snakes, small mammals, birds, large insects and even an occasional fish. The platform nest is made of sticks and leaves and hidden high in branches of a tall tree.
In flight this species usually has a \flap-flap-sail\ technique that takes it quickly through the forest canopy and undergrowth, but occasionally it will get up high in the air and soar. The Cooper\'s Hawk is mainly a small bird hunter, but reptiles and frogs can tempt it. During the winter this hawk often visits bird feeders in cities and suburbs and dines on the small feathered prey concentrated at the seeds. The nest is a large bulky construction made of twigs and small branches and placed high in the canopy near the trunk of a tree.
